The Open AI Transformation Maturity Model (OAITMM)

Most organizations are adopting AI tools. Very few are becoming AI-native software organizations.

Today I'm releasing v0.1.0 of the Open AI Transformation Maturity Model (OAITMM) — an open, evidence-based framework describing how engineering organizations evolve from assistive AI use to autonomous delivery systems.

It synthesizes ideas explored by many practitioners and is released fully open to invite critique, contribution, and real-world validation.

Includes a 5-level model, assessment framework, pillars, stage gates, and roadmap.

Quick observation from the AI frontlines: Across multiple 2024–2025 surveys (MIT, NASSCOM-EY, Deloitte, dev studies), mapping results to the OAITMM spectrum shows a clear pattern:

  • ~50% of organizations sit at Levels 1–2
  • Lots of AI touching code
  • Very little AI touching delivery

True autonomous software production (Level 5)? Maybe 1–3% of orgs. Mostly hyperscalers with budgets that could invade a small country.

Most Bengaluru R&D teams I talk to feel like Level 2–3: Extremely busy. Impressively experimental. Slightly stuck.

AI isn't just a tool upgrade. It's an operating model rewrite. Where would you place your organization today — honestly?
